VMware vSphere 7 is a server virtualization product that combines the VMware ESXi hypervisor with the VMware vCenter Server. There have been a few licensing changes since the release of vSphere version 7.

One of the most significant changes affecting all licensing releases was the important announcement released on February 3, 2020, about the VMware processor pricing model updates.

If the CPU has more than 32 cores, additional CPU licenses will be required. This post will look at the different versions of VMware vSphere 7 and the features they support.

VMware vSphere 7 is not an easy task to master. If you want to get the most out of vSphere, you must be thoroughly educated and pay a hefty fee to access all of those features. vSphere is a powerful data center virtualization option that sells to transform complex data centers into simplified cloud computing infrastructures.

However, while the mentioned features of VMware vSphere 7 are capable of everything, their diversification comes in-licenses of different levels. It requires considerable money and time resources for proper deployment and use, and you need to calculate your decision thoroughly.

How to Use vSphere 7?

VMware vSphere ESXi is a bare-metal hypervisor abstract CPUs, storage, memory, and virtual machine resources (VMs). VMware vCenter Server (formerly called VirtualCenter) is the central management and monitoring API for your data center services.

vMotion and vMotion storage are features that allow you to migrate VMs, virtual disks, and configuration files while all your systems are still running. vSphere Distributed Switch contains the ability of a virtual switch to connect to multiple hosts simultaneously for the most convenient network use. VMware DRS and Storage DRS work to balance vSphere in terms of computing capacity, storage capacity, and I/O across the environment.

vSphere software development kits provide their users with interfaces that allow them to access specific essential components of vSphere itself. VMware vSphere Virtual SMP works to increase performance by allowing one VM to access more than one physical processor at a time.

What Is vSphere Hypervisor?

VMware vSphere Hypervisor is a free, bare-metal VMware hypervisor that allows users to virtualize their servers and consolidate applications. The hypervisor has been available since 2008, when it was called Free ESXi 3.5.

The hypervisor lacks enterprise-type features for the full version of VMware ESXi, such as vMotion, Storage vMotion, High Availability, Distributed Resource Scheduler, and vSphere Data Protection. However, this includes:

  • Slim provision of disks for a virtual machine;
  • Recording and return opportunities;
  • Virtual guest operating system support;
  • VSphere client support;
  • Hardened device drivers;
  • Excessive memory commitment;
  • Support for the optical channel, iSCSI, and shared NFS storage.

VMware vSphere Hypervisor has undergone several significant changes over the years. VMware usually makes profound changes to its vSphere package every time a new version is released.

VMware vSphere with Tanzu becomes even more potent with this release with new features and capabilities. The vSphere offer with Tanzu is, in my opinion, the “sweet spot” for running containers. Allows organizations to load containers on top of their existing infrastructure with vSphere and use the same environment management tools.

Improved life cycle management

One of the main topics that has recently appeared on the radar of vSphere administrators is the obsolescence of SD cards and USB devices by VMware for stand-alone boot devices. VMware has stated that SD cards and USB devices will no longer be supported for boot capacity.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)

With vSphere 7 Update 3, VMware and NVIDIA are collaborating to create the NVIDIA AI Enterprise Suite. What is this? It is a solution that allows companies working on AI / ML projects to get started and work with AI / ML much faster. With the solution, combining VMware infrastructure, operations, management, and vice versa, NVIDIA provides GPU expertise, GPU virtualization technology, and pre-built tools.

Resource management

VMware has dramatically improved the collection of memory statistics without additional third-party solutions or other tools. Detailed memory statistics are now embedded directly in vSphere and are visible in the interface.


VMware vSphere powers most of the on-premises data centers in the world today, and vSphere 7 administrators are in high demand in the job market.
